How do you know if you or someone you know has ADHD?

Below are some of the symptoms of ADHD in more detail:

Inattentive Symptoms

  • Unable to pay continuous attention
  • Poor listening skills
  • Unable to complete tasks
  • Poor organizational skills
  • Avoiding tasks that require sustained thinking
  • Losing items frequently
  • Careless mistakes
  • Getting easily distracted
  • Being forgetful in daily activities

Hyperactive Symptoms

  • Fidgeting/Squirming
  • Unable to stay in one’s seat
  • Restlessness: running, climbing
  • Trouble with quiet activities
  • Needing to be “on the go”
  • Talking too much

Impulsive Symptoms

  • Talking out of turn
  • Blurting out answers
  • Trouble taking turns
  • Interrupting or intruding on others

Having some or all of these symptoms does not mean that you or your loved one has ADHD.  It is important to note also, that a number of mental health disorders share some of the same symptoms as ADHD. It is important therefore, to distinguish ADHD from other disorders.

Only a trained health care professional such as a physician, psychiatrist or psychologist can diagnose ADHD.

Symptoms in Adults

Adults may experience symptoms differently from children and teens. Below are a few examples of how adults may experience ADHD symptoms.

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Disorganized
  • Failure to plan ahead
  • Difficulty initiating and completing tasks
  • Shifts activities prematurely
  • Misjudges time
  • Forgetful
  • Loses things
  • Makes impulsive decisions
  • Has difficulties at work
  • Problems with social interactions
